Signs Your Child May Need Glasses

Kids rarely walk up to a parent and say, “Hey, I think I need glasses.” Most children assume that however they see the world is how everyone sees it — which means vision problems can go unnoticed for months, or even years, especially before a child learns to read.

As parents ourselves, the team at Cypress Vision Optometry knows how easy it is to miss the early signs. Here’s what to watch for, and when it’s time to schedule an exam.

Common Signs of Vision Problems in Children

Sitting too close to screens or holding books close to their face This is one of the most common signs of nearsightedness (myopia). If your child scoots closer to the TV or holds books just inches from their nose, it’s worth getting checked.

Squinting or tilting the head Squinting can be an attempt to sharpen blurry vision, while a consistent head tilt may indicate an eye alignment issue.

Frequent eye rubbing While occasional rubbing is normal (especially when tired), frequent rubbing — particularly during reading or screen time — can signal eye strain or fatigue.

Complaints of headaches or eye strain Kids don’t always connect headaches to their vision. If your child complains of frequent headaches, especially after school or reading, it’s worth ruling out an uncorrected vision problem.

Losing their place while reading, or avoiding reading altogether Skipping lines, using a finger to track words well past the age when that’s typical, or actively avoiding reading can point to a focusing or tracking issue.

One eye wandering or turning This can be a sign of strabismus (eye misalignment), which is treatable but benefits significantly from early intervention.

Poor hand-eye coordination or clumsiness Difficulty catching a ball, frequent trips or falls, or general clumsiness can sometimes stem from vision problems rather than developmental delays.

Struggling in school despite effort Teachers are often the first to notice a child squinting at the whiteboard or struggling to keep up. If report cards mention trouble focusing or falling behind despite clear effort, it’s worth having their vision checked.

Why Early Detection Matters

Vision problems that go uncorrected during childhood can affect more than just eyesight — they can impact reading development, classroom performance, sports ability, and even self-confidence. The earlier an issue is identified, the more effectively it can typically be treated, whether that means glasses, vision therapy, or simply monitoring over time.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Eye Exam

We know that visiting a new doctor can feel intimidating for kids, so we aim to make the process comfortable and even a little fun. A comprehensive children’s eye exam typically includes:

  • A discussion of family eye health history

  • Visual acuity testing appropriate for your child’s age

  • Screening for common conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism

  • An eye alignment and eye movement check

  • A basic eye health evaluation

Our Approach to Family & Children’s Eye Care

At Cypress Vision Optometry, we see children from their very first exam through their teenage years — and often their parents and grandparents, too. We take the time to explain what we’re looking for in terms kids and parents can both understand, and we never rush through an appointment. [Internal link: Family & Children’s Eye Care]

When to Schedule

If you’ve noticed any of the signs above — or if it’s simply been a while since your child’s last exam — don’t wait for a school screening to catch what a comprehensive exam could find sooner. School vision screenings are helpful, but they’re not a substitute for a full eye exam.
